Tuesday
the 14th of August
oday
I ventured to Vathi in the morning to use the internet at one of the many cafes
nestled along the side of the port. I love Vathi, it’s like the Melbourne of
the island as there are bars and glorious restaurants.
There
was something nostalgic about today, or perhaps it was just me, but I found
myself constantly marvelling this island and all that it is made up of.
I’ve
always imagined myself as an artist, however my hand does not paint, nor does
it draw as well as what I picture in my mind. I instead, find method explaining
such pictures with the assistance of carefully placed words. Now I understand
that I have provided you all with many photographs of my island, but I feel
that the photos still do not portray the beauty this island possesses so I will
attempt to provide you with some imagery.
As
I am writing this I am sitting in the warm sun quietly observing all that is. I
am listening to the breeze. The way it purrs through the sails of the docked boats
and gently rocks them back and forth. The way it lifts the salt from the ocean
and lands it delicately on my skin.
As
I close my eyes I smell summer. The smell of warm olive trees laden with green
olives, and of smouldering wood fuelling fires for glorious meats and fish. Lemon
and citrus aromas are carried from the nearby tavernas. Sweet oregano resting on plump sun-ripened tomatoes with
tart, creamy feta cheese carefully dressed in locally pressed olive oil and sea
salt.
Later
in the day my friend took me to the other side of the island to visit one of
the other beaches. This beach (I cant remember the name) is situated on the
edge of the island and faces the main thoroughfare for all boats and ferries.
It’s before the beach of Agios Yianni
and often plays refuge to campers and those seeking a break from the popularity
of the other beaches on the island.
