The Last of the Travel Diaries #5

T

he eve of Wednesday the 15th of August was celebrated in standard Meganisi style with an outing to Petrino and then Precious Club. Once again I consumed what seemed to be my body weight in alcohol and ended up feeling slightly sorry for myself the following morning. The night however was another memorable night as the clubs were brimming with Meganisi residents who had returned from Athens for Panagia, the ascension of the Virgin Mary. It was great to see people I hadn’t seen in years and to see the island so busy.

On Thursday there was a volleyball competition on Fanari beach. The teams were made up of residents of the three towns, Spartochori, Katomeri and Vathi.  I have never seen this beach so busy!

Friday was a quiet day as I began to pack up the house for my departure.  That night was spent watching the stars and drinking beer on the roof of an old water tank. The stars are amazing on this island as there are no city lights to dim their glow. The entire Milky Way and hundreds of constellations are clearly visible.

Saturday the 18th of August- my last Saturday night on Meganisi. I made a small attempt to avoid going out this night, but in true form I went and glorified myself with vodka and sodas. The night started at Petrino with more Zembetiko dancing and ended painfully at Precious Club at 6:30am to the sound of goats and roosters.
